Welcome to Screen Haven
For me, screens big and small have always served as warm refuges - tools for unwinding after a busy day, or for relaxing on a not-so-busy day. This is true at least for TV shows, movies, and video games (not true for social media and other vessels of FOMO and doomscrolling).
I've been an avid TV watcher since I picked up Lost in high school. I worked at the library and took the opportunity to check out the DVDs, season-by-season, until my dad and I were caught up with the live episodes, somewhere around season 4. Breaking Bad and Arrested Development followed in the lead-up to college, and TV has remained an important pastime for me ever since.
Movies and video games are runners-up to TV in my heart, but they've been important to me even longer. Middle- and high school-me was obsessed with the Oscars and the IMDB top 250. Nowadays, I love seeing movies at my local (I'm using this term generously, as it's a 40-minute drive) Alamo Drafthouse or on streaming, but I'm more likely to watch On Cinema's "coverage" of Oscar night than the actual Academy Awards.
Video games have been a part of my life since Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. at grandma's house and Pokemon Yellow at home. I played solo on SNES, N64, PS2, Gamecube, and Wii before going online with my Xbox 360 in my first year of high school. Today, I enjoy my Xbox Series X for its backwards compatability, Game Pass access, and Halo sessions with my wife; my PS4 for great Sony exclusives; and my Switch for those unmissable Nintendo games. I have an insurmountable backlog, and not all games connect with me anymore - but when they do, I feel like a kid again.
This blog is my place to ramble on about what I'm watching and playing, when I'm so inclined. I'll also write about what I'm doing off-screen from time to time, as I do also enjoy attending live shows, listening to albums and podcasts, reading books, and consuming good food and beer.
This goes for all of the above: take it or leave it! And if you choose to take it - thanks for reading.
Andy
